When They’re Runnin’, It’s Time to Go Fishin’
Notes on Fishing for Men
“When they’re runnin’, it’s time to go fishin’.”
Before moving to Colorado, we lived in Wisconsin. Every spring the walleye and white bass made their runs up the Fox and Wolf Rivers, and during those weeks it was shoulder-to-shoulder fishing off every bridge in town. You didn’t need special equipment or secret knowledge. You just needed to show up. The fish were moving in high concentrations through predictable places at a predictable time, and the odds of landing one — or a bucketful — were about as good as they ever get.
The key was knowing when they were running and being ready when they were.
Once Thanksgiving passes, one of the best Kingdom fishing opportunities of the year is fast approaching: the Christmas season.
It’s a season of compressed emotion. For some it’s full of warmth and joy. For others it’s hollow, lonely, or colored by loss. It’s a season of family gatherings and painful absences, of old relationships reconsidered, of self-evaluation and longing. The daily grind gets interrupted. The usual defenses come down a little. And uniquely, the Christmas season is one of the few times all year when God’s example of love, sacrifice, and relationship invades even the most secular corners of the culture.
Hearts are uniquely positioned during this season — The fish are running.
Look at your holiday calendar differently this year. The get-together with neighbors. The work party. The family gathering. The old friend you’ve been meaning to reach out to. Each one is a bridge. Each one is a Kingdom opportunity dressed up as a social event.
Don’t settle for the empty commercialism the world offers. The best and most valuable gift anyone could ever receive is the Gift of Christmas — Jesus Himself. You’ve been uniquely positioned in the world to reach specific people that God loves. Most of them are just waiting for an invitation.
