⭐ Week 5 — The Light of Revelation
(Sunday's Devotional)
Following God’s Guidance on the Journey
Matthew 2:1–12
How confusing that visit from the Magi must have been for Mary and Joseph — strangers from a distant land bowing before their child, offering lavish gifts they didn’t yet realize they would desperately need. Honor from unexpected places. Provision they couldn’t have foreseen. Guidance from God they were still learning to trust as they walked out their part in the first Christmas story.
Welcome to Week 5 of Christmas Lights.
🌟 Reflection
There are moments in life when we wish God would hang a sign in the sky or write on the wall:
“This way.”
“Turn here.”
“Stop.”
“Trust Me.”
We long for clarity, direction, some visible assurance that we are on the right road. The Magi knew that longing well. They weren’t Jews, they weren’t followers of Yahweh. For generations they had studied the heavens, examined ancient writings, and learned from wise teachers. They believed that “the gods” left clues in creation — signs woven into the natural world that pointed to their purposes. It’s interesting that God would use them to watch for the signs of his coming.
And then… one night…
a star rose.
Not just any star — a sign so unusual, so radiant, so unmistakably divine that they recognized it instantly as revelation. Something heaven-sent. Something that demanded a response.
Revelation always invites a response.
These men left home, security, routines, and comfort. They followed a sign into unfamiliar territory, across hundreds of miles of desert, into a nation not their own. They traveled “toward” what they did not fully understand — trusting that the God who revealed the sign would reveal the meaning.
Along the way, they encountered multiple kinds of “signs”:
• Signs in nature
God began their journey with a star — something visible, unmistakable, extraordinary, and yet rooted in creation.
• Signs in Scripture
It’s likely that the Prophet Daniel, the leader of the Magi while he was in captivity, left written prophecies concerning the Jewish Messiah so they were looking for the signs of His coming. But they didn’t have any of the details until Herod’s scholars quoted the prophet Micah, revealing Bethlehem as the location of the Messiah (Micah 5:2). Nature pointed them forward; Scripture guided them precisely.
• Signs in people
They discerned whom to trust and whom to avoid. Herod used religious language, said the the “right” things, but his motives were corrupt. The story of the Magi show us that not every voice wrapped in “spiritual” language leads toward God or speaks for God.
• Signs from the Holy Spirit
After worshipping Jesus, they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod. Revelation always calls for obedience — and they, like Joseph, listened and obeyed.
Through every sign, every stop, every twist in the road, God was guiding them… not just to the right place, but to the right posture.
Because the goal of revelation isn’t information — it’s worship.
“When they saw the child… they bowed down and worshiped Him.”
(Matthew 2:11)
The Magi traveled far not to satisfy curiosity, not to achieve status, not to decode some ancient mystery — but to honor the King.
Revelation led them to surrender, awe, joy, and the fulfilment of their part in His story.
Maybe this week you find yourself searching for direction.
Maybe you long for a sign, a confirmation, a sense of God’s leading.
Maybe you’re facing decisions where the road feels unclear.
Here’s the hope of the Magi’s story:
God still guides those who seek Him.
God still reveals truth to those who listen.
God still shines light for those willing to follow.
And all of it will always lead you closer to Jesus, the person of Christmas.
🙏 Prayer Prompt
Lord,
Open my eyes to the ways You are guiding me.
Help me recognize the signs You place along my path — in Scripture, in wise counsel, in creation, in the prompting of Your Spirit.
Give me discernment to know what is from You and what is not.
Give me courage to follow wherever You lead.
And when revelation comes, let it draw me not into pride or certainty, but into worship and my part in your story.
Lead me, Lord, and I will follow.
Amen.
