Week 3 - RE:COMMIT
John 21:15–19
Introduction
What began with confusion and was met with grace now becomes a moment of decision.
The fire has burned low. The meal is finished. The silence lingers.
Peter has been welcomed back into the circle, warmed by Jesus’ presence, and reminded that he still belongs. But restoration does not end with comfort. It moves toward commitment.
Jesus now turns His attention to Peter — not to reopen old wounds, but to complete the work of healing and to reestablish his calling.
Recommitment always follows restoration.
Scripture
“When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?’”
— John 21:15 (NIV)
Reflection
Jesus addresses Peter by his given name — Simon, son of John. This is personal. Grounded. Intentional.
“Do you truly love me more than these?”
The question is pointed. These are the fish. The nets. The familiar life Peter returned to when hope collapsed. Jesus is asking Peter to name his deepest allegiance.
Peter responds without bravado. No bold promises. No sweeping declarations.
“Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus accepts Peter’s answer — and then gives it direction.
“Feed my lambs.”
“Take care of my sheep.”
“Feed my sheep.”
Love for Jesus is never separated from responsibility for others. Devotion finds its truest expression in faithful service.
The third question cuts deeper. Peter is hurt — not because Jesus doubts him, but because the question brings him full circle. Three denials. Three affirmations. Not to shame Peter, but to restore him completely.
Then Jesus looks beyond the moment.
Peter will follow — not just in service, but in sacrifice. The call that once drew him away from boats and nets will one day lead him where he would not choose to go. Even so, it will glorify God.
And Jesus ends where He began:
“Follow me.”
Recommitment is not a return to the past.
It is a renewed yes to following Jesus forward.
Daily Prayer Prompts & Responses
Monday — Do You Truly Love Me?
Scripture: John 21:15 (NIV)
When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
Intro:
Jesus’ question exposes what competes for our deepest devotion.
Prayer Prompt:
Lord, what are the “these” in my life that compete with loving You fully? Jesus, You know my heart — teach me to love You above all else.
Response:
Name one thing that has quietly taken first place in your life. Offer it back to Jesus in prayer today.
Tuesday — Love Expressed Through Service
Scripture: John 21:15 (NIV)
When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
Intro:
Love for Jesus always moves outward toward others.
Prayer Prompt:
Jesus, how are You inviting me to express my love for You through serving others?
Response:
Look for one small, intentional way to serve someone today without expecting recognition.
Wednesday — Caring for What Matters to Jesus
Scripture: John 21:16 (NIV)
Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
Intro:
Jesus entrusts people — not organizations— with those who love Him. His Kingdom is made up of ministers — not ministries.
Prayer Prompt:
Lord, whose care have I been avoiding or neglecting? Teach me to love what You love.
Response:
Pray specifically for one person God has placed in your care, and ask how you can show that care this week.
Thursday — Healing Old Wounds
Scripture: John 21:17 (NIV)
The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.”
Intro:
Jesus revisits our deepest failures not to reopen wounds, but to heal them fully from the inside out.
Prayer Prompt:
Jesus, where does past failure still shape how I see myself? You know all things — help me trust Your restoration.
Response:
Write down a past failure and then write beside it: “Restored by Jesus.” Let that truth replace the memory.
Friday — Following Jesus Forward
Scripture: John 21:18–19 (NIV)
Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”
Intro:
Recommitment means trusting Jesus with a future we cannot control and cannot see. Into the unknown with a renewed faith shaped by our past yet not defined or limited by it.
Prayer Prompt:
Lord, where are You asking me to follow You even when the path feels uncertain? Jesus, give me courage to say yes again.
Response:
Take one obedient step today — however small — that aligns with following Jesus more fully.
Closing
Recommitment is not about proving devotion.
It is about responding again to the voice that still says, “Follow me.”
