Week 2 Tuesday — Walking with the Word
Life from the Dust
Life from the Dust
Introduction
Yesterday, the psalmist cried out from the dust: “My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to your word!” It was a desperate prayer from someone who knew he couldn’t resurrect himself. He needed life to come from outside himself, from God’s Word, or he would remain in the grave.
Many of us who have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior forget that our adoption into God’s family is not just the privilege to call God Abba (Daddy). When we are knocked down and stuck in the dust, we forget—or don’t realize—the extraordinary assets and resources that the Father has deposited to our account. We fail to withdraw what He has graciously provided for our wholeness and success.
Today we turn to the apostle Paul, who shows us the stunning answer to the psalmist’s prayer. How does God give life according to His Word? Through the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead—the Spirit who now dwells in us.
Scripture
¹⁰But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. ¹¹If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
— Romans 8:10-11 (ESV)
Reflection
The psalmist’s prayer—”give me life according to your word”—finds its ultimate answer here in Romans 8. Paul reveals that the life-giving power of God’s Word is not abstract or theoretical. It is the Holy Spirit Himself, dwelling within us, bringing resurrection life to our mortal bodies.
Notice the progression Paul describes. “If Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.” This is the tension every believer lives in. We still inhabit bodies affected by sin—bodies that get weary, sick, discouraged, and eventually die. We know what it feels like to cling to the dust. But Paul says the Spirit within us is life. Not will be life someday. Is life—right now, in the midst of our weakness.
Then Paul makes an astonishing connection: “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.” The same power that rolled away the stone, that conquered death itself, that raised Jesus from the grave—that power lives in us.
This is how God answers the psalmist’s prayer. When we cry out “give me life according to your word,” God doesn’t just send encouragement or moral principles. He sends the Holy Spirit—the very agent of resurrection—to dwell within us and give life to our mortal bodies.
But notice something critical: Paul says the Spirit gives life “through his Spirit who dwells in you.” This isn’t a one-time event at salvation. This is an ongoing, present-tense reality. The Spirit continually gives life. He renews. He strengthens. He raises us from the dust again and again.
This is why the psalmist’s instinct was right. When he was in the dust, he didn’t just ask to feel better or have his circumstances change. He asked for life according to God’s Word—because he understood that true life comes from God alone, through His Word, by His Spirit.
And here’s the hope: if the Spirit can raise the dead, He can certainly raise you from whatever dust you’re clinging to today. The Spirit who hovered over the waters at creation, who breathed life into Adam’s nostrils, who raised Jesus from death—that same Spirit dwells in you. And He is in the business of bringing life where there is death, hope where there is despair, strength where there is weakness.
The psalmist prayed, “give me life according to your word.” Paul shows us that prayer has been answered in Christ. The Word became flesh, died, and rose again. And now, through the indwelling Spirit, that resurrection power is ours.
“He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.” — This is the way.
Prayer Prompts
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in me. I confess that I often live as though I’m powerless, as though the dust has the final word. But Your Word declares that resurrection life is mine through the Holy Spirit. Today, I invite the Spirit to give life to the places in me that feel dead—my faith, my hope, my joy, my obedience. Breathe life into me again. Raise me from the dust by Your power, not mine. Let the life of Christ in me be evident to everyone around me. Amen.
Response
Reflect on these questions today:
“The Spirit is life because of righteousness.” Do you believe the Holy Spirit is actively giving you life right now, or do you live as though you’re on your own? What would change if you truly believed resurrection power dwells in you?
The psalmist prayed “give me life according to your word.” What specific area of your life feels dead or stuck in the dust right now? How can you invite the Holy Spirit to bring resurrection life to that place today?
“He will also give life to your mortal bodies.” This promise isn’t just for the future—it’s for now. Where do you need the Spirit’s life-giving power in your physical, emotional, or spiritual body today? Ask Him specifically, and then cooperate with His work by taking one step of obedience or trust.
