Walking with The Word
An Introduction to Our Journey Through Psalm 119
Welcome to a new journey together.
Over the next eight weeks, we will walk slowly and intentionally through Psalm 119—a masterpiece of devotion, a love letter to God’s Word, and an invitation to encounter the Living God through Scripture.
This isn’t just a Bible study. It’s something deeper. It’s an invitation to fall in love with God’s Word the way the psalmist did—with passion, delight, trust, and unwavering commitment. To discover that Scripture isn’t a duty to fulfill but a light that guides us home.
If you’ve ever felt distant from God’s Word—overwhelmed by it, intimidated by it, or unsure how it applies to your everyday life—this devotional is for you. If you long to experience the kind of intimacy with Scripture that transforms how you think, pray, and live, then walk with me.
Together, we’ll learn what it means to treasure God’s Word above all else.
How This Devotional Works
Each day, you'll receive one email each morning containing that day's devotional—Monday through Saturday—plus a Sabbath rest prompt on Sunday.
Here’s the rhythm we’ll follow:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday: We’ll explore one stanza from Psalm 119, meditating on the psalmist’s love for God’s Word and what it reveals about walking faithfully with the Lord.
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday: We’ll turn to the New Testament to see how the themes from Psalm 119 find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.
Sunday: A day of Sabbath rest with prayer prompts to reflect on the week and let God’s Word settle deeply into your heart.
Each devotional includes Scripture, reflection, prayer prompts, and response questions to help you engage with God's Word personally and practically. You can read them as they arrive each morning, or work through them at your own pace throughout the day. There's no pressure—just an invitation to meet God in His Word, step by step.
About Psalm 119
Psalm 119 is the longest psalm—and the longest chapter—in the entire Bible. But it’s not long because it’s repetitive or tedious. It’s long because the author couldn’t stop talking about what he loved most: God’s Word.
This psalm is structured as an acrostic poem built around the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Each of the 22 stanzas contains 8 verses, and every line in that stanza begins with the same Hebrew letter. The first stanza starts with *Aleph* (א), the second with *Bet* (ב), and so on, all the way through to *Tav* (ת)—the final letter.
In the original Hebrew, this creates a beautiful, rhythmic meditation that covers the entire alphabet—symbolizing the completeness and sufficiency of God’s revelation. Unfortunately, that artistry is lost in English translation. But what remains is just as powerful: a heart fully devoted to the God who speaks.
Out of 176 verses, at least 171 mention God’s Word in some form. The psalmist uses eight different Hebrew terms to describe Scripture, each one revealing a different facet of how God communicates with us:
Law (torah) — God’s instruction and teaching
Word (dabar) — God’s spoken message
Judgments (mishpatim) — God’s righteous decrees
Testimonies (edut) — God’s faithful witness
Commandments (mitzvah) — God’s authoritative directives
Statutes (huqqim) — God’s established ordinances
Precepts (piqqudim) — God’s detailed guidance
Word (imrah) — God’s promise and declaration
These aren’t just synonyms. Each term shows us a different way God’s Word meets us—commanding, guiding, comforting, teaching, and revealing who He is.
Scripture
”Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
This is the heartbeat of Psalm 119—and the theme of our entire journey together.
God’s Word is not abstract theology. It’s not distant or irrelevant. It is personal, practical, and present. It illuminates the step directly in front of us and the road stretching ahead.
A lamp doesn’t light up the entire journey at once. It reveals just enough to take the next faithful step. And that’s what we’ll do together over these eight weeks: walk one step at a time, guided by the light of God’s Word, trusting that He will lead us faithfully forward.
Prayer Prompts
Before we begin, pause and bring your heart honestly before God:
Lord,
You know why I’m here. You see the hunger in my heart—or maybe the weariness. You know my questions, my doubts, and my hopes. As I prepare to walk through Psalm 119, meet me where I am. Open my eyes to see wonderful things in Your Word. Give me a heart that desires You above all else. Teach me to love what You love and to walk faithfully in Your truth. Amen.
