Fishing Is 3D — Depth Matters
Notes on Fishing for Men
“You can’t just fish on the surface. Use your sinkers!”
Years ago on a missions trip to Cambodia, a local missionary took a few of us out for a morning of saltwater fishing around the coral reefs of the outlying islands. We weren’t after the big pelagic fish — just the smaller reef species tucked in tight to the coral. Because of predators and powerful currents, those fish hugged the structure close. To reach them, the missionary had us rig up heavy sinkers to drive our bait — squid heads — straight down through the current right to their front door. It was just like jigging back home. And it worked.
That morning on the water got me thinking about Kingdom fishing. In our culture today, surface fishing just doesn’t produce the results it once did. Bridge-building events, evangelistic outreaches, special services — these are still valuable tools, and I’m not suggesting we abandon them. But as primary instruments of the Great Commission, they have real limitations. They struggle to get below the surface of a person’s life. They work best when they’re attached to something deeper — a real relationship.
Fishing is three-dimensional. Depth is critical.
The witness of a genuine follower of Christ — someone in a real relationship with God, living out their life honestly, victories and failures alike — is one of the most powerful influences available for the cause of Christ. Not a polished presentation. A real life.
Relational evangelism isn’t a program. It’s a lifestyle. It’s the recognition that each of us is a strategic connection point to Jesus, uniquely qualified and positioned to influence specific people in our sphere. It’s also understanding that the Great Commission is the individual responsibility of every believer — not just the clergy, not just the church staff, not just the people with the gift of evangelism.
Not only must we share the Good News. We must genuinely care about the people who don’t yet know it.
Lost people matter to God. The question is — do they matter to us?
